Dr. Mary E. Schmidt is a physician and President of Schmidt & Libby Health Advisory Group. She is board certified in Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine and has a master’s degree in public health from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH). She is a member of the Department of Medicine, Infectious Disease section, at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus where she is focusing on research and teaching. Her current academic titles include Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Inova Campus and Adjunctive Associate Professor at JHSPH. Dr. Schmidt is a Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society of America, has published in major journals and given presentations at national specialty society meetings. She has received honors as an infectious disease doctor for her care of patients and in her role as teaching faculty at Inova Fairfax Hospital. She has been honored as a Top Doctor by Washingtonian Magazine, among Best Physicians by Washington Consumer Checkbook, a Top Doctor in America, and the Best Doctor in Virginia. She has consulted with many media outlets as an infectious disease expert.
Dr. Schmidt’s focus is promoting the health and welfare of the population. She currently serves on for-profit and nonprofit boards and has had several professional leadership positions including President of the Medical Staff at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus from 2010 through 2013 where she guided the quality and citizenship of 2,400 physicians, Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases at Inova, supporting a team approach to provide excellent care and low infection rates. She has served as a member of the Inova Health System Quality and Safety Board, President of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia, a board member of the Medical Society of Virginia, and has chaired many healthcare-related committees.
In her spare time, she volunteers with several organizations, supporting or working directly with patients in need of healthcare not readily available to them. She is a board member of Families Against Cult Teachings and is a special advisor to the President of Elizabethtown College. She and her husband, Dr. Russell Libby, support scholarships for students at Elizabethtown College, George Washington University School of Medicine, and support several programs at George Mason University School of Performing and Visual Arts. She created the first mentorship award for professors at Elizabethtown College.
